Sounds of Summer

The main sound of summer 2011 here in the Midwest is that of the 13-year cicadas.  We live in the woods.  Need I say more?  It is deafening and shrill, especially in the heat of the day.  The little boogers don't bite or hurt anyone, but they are flying all about so that anytime you try to get in or out a door you have to swat and watch out.  When you take off in the car and discover there is one attached to you....no fun!  When one flies into your face.....no fun!  Relief is soon in sight, though.  Supposedly they only last about four weeks and I think we're currently on week three.  Then we have relief for thirteen more years. Phew!

We've also heard a lot of splashing this week, as the youngest three have been in swimming lessons.  They are all doing well and enjoying being in the water.  We love the University facilities and it's also fun to watch the high divers while the kids are in lessons.
